ADOPTION PROCESS

Adopting a rescued dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Rescued dogs are often the most loyal companions and very loving. But, like any strong, healthy relationship, developing a strong relationship with your rescue dog requires work and commitment. Adopting a rescue dog can also be one of the most challenges experiences in your life.

Some of these dogs have suffered abandonment, neglect and sometimes abuse. They require a patient, caring and committed home to help them adjust to their new environment. Some dogs may suffer from separation anxiety and bark or cry when left alone. This can last for several days or longer. It is for that reason that we ask that you be willing to work with your dog for as long as it takes.

In addition, some dogs may require help in housebreaking again. When a dog is brought to a new home, he'll need time to adjust and get acclimated to his new surroundings and schedule. He/she may have accidents during this period.

During the transition period, we will be available during normal business hours to offer suggestions and assist you with any problems you may have with your new Waggytail. In the event of an emergency, please contact us immediately. If you don't reach us right away, we'll return your call as soon as possible if you specify it’s an emergency.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must be at least 22 years of age and have valid photo identification.
  • You must be able to support the costs of caring for the animal by being gainfully employed or if retired possessing adequate resources.
  • All current cats/dogs in household must already be spayed/neutered and up to date with all vaccinations.
  • You must personally fill out an Adoption Application and submit it for approval.
  • You must sign and accept the terms of our Adoption Agreement.
  • The person that will be responsible for the companion animal must be present at the time of the adoption and sign an adoption contract.
  • NO GIFT ADOPTIONS unless the person receiving the animal visit with the animal before and submits an application.
  • Everyone in the household must agree to the adoption of the animal; including roommates.
  • If, for any reason, an adopter is unable to care for a pet adopted from Waggytail Rescue, the animal must be returned to us and we will happily find him or her a new home. NO EXCEPTIONS.

We will contact you by email or by phone to arrange a meeting with you and the dog.  We do not have a shelter and all of our dogs are fostered by our wonderful volunteers.

Our goal is to try to find the perfect match between the rescued animal and the adopter.  We want to make sure that the personality of the animal matches the adopter's idea of their perfect pet. As these animals have been through so much in their lives, we try to ensure a stable home and minimize the risk of yet another move.

After you've adopted your new Waggytail, that animal and its subsequent behavior and healthy are YOUR responsibility. You'll be given a packet of information regarding care and behavior to help you make your and your new pet's life a fulfilling and successful one.

DONATION FEES:

CURRENT REQUIRED ADOPTION DONATIONS:

  • $350 for puppies under 6 months*
  • $300 for puppies 7-16 months*
  • $250 for dogs 17 months to 9 years*
  • $200 for seniors over 9 years of age ($150 in special situations)*

*May be higher for pure breed and "tea cup" animals. Special rates may be given to special needs pets.

Did you know we may spend as much as $3000 on rehabilitating a single animal?

The adoption donation allows us to continue to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected, and abandoned animals.

All animals are:

  • given basic vet exam and treated for any immediate needs
  • spayed/neutered
  • fully vaccinated
  • heartworm tested
  • dewormed and examined for fleas and treated if necessary
  • microchipped
  • given in-home behavior evaluation
